Healthy french toast

This is the best recipe for lazy mornings!

It’s time to have something different than the daily bowl with cereals or scramble eggs. Let’s make delicious french toasts with maple syrup.

I remember when I tried french toast for the first time. I was a little bit sceptic as combination eggs, cinnamon and vanilla sounded a little bit weird even for me, but I fell in love with this sweet option and I make it always when I fell like I deserve special breakfast after a long and busy week. For more special breakfasts, you can try low-cal chia pancakes which I made last year.

Is it French?

I was wondering if the french toast is actually original a recipe from France as you can guess, but surprisingly the first recipe was created in Ancient Rome and it was dipped slice of bread in the egg-milk mixture before frying. The french toast as we know it now came a little bit later in the 17th century in the UK and US.

Why is it healthier?

Everything is about the right ingredients. I am sure even sweet choices can be actually healthy and still enjoyable, and this recipe is a good example of that.  Of course, we can make french toast with sugar, butter, sweet toppings and white bread, but I think it’s a good time to be thinking about healthier options.

Bread: for this recipe, I used wholemeal organic bread instead of white bread. You can use a rye bread what I am sure will be even better because of good nutrition values.

No sugar: I didn’t put any sugar and it tastes still awesome!

Maple syrup: You can manage how much maple syrup you will use. Less is better. Add more fruits

Oil: If you have a non-stick pan you don’t need to use any oil if you don’t have this type of pan fell free to use non-stick oil or a little bit butter (it’s not the best option but even I had to use butter as my pan is old and super sticky). Use less oil.

MYTH unhealthy breakfast

Probably you would think that french toast is not what you need to eat every day and it’s not suitable for diet, but the truth is different. With a few smart ingredients, you can make low-fat, high protein and high fibre breakfast.

How to make french toast

Mixture: mix all ingredients until it’s smooth and combine well

Bread: Important part for good french toast. Soak quality bread in mixture for 2 minutes each side.

Frying: Cook slices of bread on a non-stick pan or use oil spray or butter. Cook it for 2 minutes or until a toast is golden.
